Family Room Furniture

We need a couch. Matt sold ours while I was at bible study last night. In fact, I came home to new living room furniture...

He was quite proud of his new setup. However, now we really need a couch before he gets too comfortable with beach chairs for our family room furniture.

Before I give you an idea of what we're looking for, let me tell you what we don't want...
Our last couch was a microfiber sectional. Although it was super comfy, the "L" took up half of our teeny cozy family room. So we need a much smaller sofa for this room.
I know all of you moms out there are going to call me CRAZY, but we really want a white/cream couch. I just love the look of a white couch, and we have a white dog (that sheds terribly). White couches somehow look even more gorgeous under a nice big floor lamp like one of those made by Kichler Lighting.

So now that you know what doesn't work in our family room, I need any advice you have for sofa shopping on a budget. Here are some of my very favorite styles out there right now...
{PB Buchanan Sofa}
{Bassett Custom Classics Sofa}
{Kelly Deck Design}
{Williams-Sonoma Pierce Sofa}
{White Slipcover Sofa}

 Where to shop? Slipcover vs. Upholstered? Fabric recommendations?

Sofa advice welcomed!

  1. I too ADORE white furniture but Hurley has ruined that dream for me. I would say definitely slip cover if you are planning on having kids. While I don't have kids I can tell you our light colored old furniture took a beating with just us and dogs. One red wine slip....oh man, can't even think about it. Good luck!!

  2. We have that white Buchanan sofa from PB and LOVE IT...it's in our living room, and it's been a wonderful addition. i'm a little nervous about the kiddos getting stains and such on it, but for the price, it couldn't be beat in my mind. it's comfortable, relaxed yet still "nice", and it's worn well the past 3 years we've had it!!

  3. I don't have a dog but I do have three kiddos. While the "look" of white is nice it might be very hard to maintain, so I would say good for the slip cover sofas. We have had a PB slip covered sofa for ten years now and it is so easy to take off and just throw in the wash.

  4. The lawn chairs are too funny! I love the look of a white/cream sofa. If you don't have kids and aren't planning on them soon, why not?

    We have a white slipcovered Pottery Barn rocker in the nursery (same white twill fabric they use for sofas) and it's actually held up pretty well. Was it a smart idea for the nursery? Nope. But I had to have it. Now there's a crayon mark on the seat and the arms are dirty from my daughter playing in it so Ihave to bite the bullet and pay to have the slipcovers drycleaned. I know that will be a hefty dry cleaning bill.

    We have a (dark colored) sofa from Z Gallerie and I cannot discourage you enough from buying from there. The fabric almost instantly showed wear and the cushions have not held their shape at all. It's only 4 years old and we already need to replace it. As soon as we move, it's gone. So, beware of Z Gallerie!

  5. We have a white slipcovered couch and LOVE it! So easy to pop in the washing machine if you spill something!

  6. I have the PB Comfort Slipcovered Sofa with a big black dog. She is not allowed on the couch but obviously some of her hair still gets on it. It has not been a problem. I think I like knowing that if there was a major issue it could be taken care of due to the slipcover. Good luck!

  7. It's like the beach up in your living room! I LOVE IT! hahaha- forget finding a new couch. I think Matt has a future in interior decorating.

  8. We have a cream one that we designed at Furniture Land South, it's by Robin Bruce! It sits in our formal sitting room so it's actually never really been sat on but I LOVE it and wish it would work in our living room.

    Love the beach chairs though ;)

  9. Sorry, no advice here. But, I love his idea of the beach chairs! Too funny! (Just not forever!) :)

  10. no way...im a mom and we ordered ivory sofas from macys. they have a 7year stain warranty where if you get a stain they come out and clean it for you as much as you want for 7 years!! the white will look great in there!! good luck! xo

  11. The furniture company Rowe actually makes couches for PB. They are cheaper and have more fabric options - if you check their website, you can find stores near you. I have the Rowe Darby in a white slipcover, and I loooove the white slipcover. It is easy to wash (like that time I smooshed chocolate in it or spilled an entire diet coke on it).

    1. I will definitely be looking into Rowe! How did I not know about that?! Thank you so much!! We are definitely leaning towards a slip cover after all of the advice on yesterday's post! Sounds like we'd be pretty crazy not to go that route! :)

  12. hahah That is pretty awesome that he tried! He even added the throw pillows. too cute! We also ordered our big sectional from Macy's. Now I know that's not what you are looking for, but I'd look there to see what they have as their prices were great and they do sales regularly too!

  13. We have a wonderful cream colored couch made by England. We found it at a local furniture store here in Texas but I'm certain they're sold elsewhere. It was very budget friendly and we were able to pick our couch fabric and pillow fabrics for no additional cost. We also had our couch scotch guarded and it's endured quite a few spills over the years. Good luck!

  14. I love a white/cream couch. I am not a Mom, but totally get why that could be a problemo in the future. I would definitely go a slipcover route, so you'll have the option of changing to a darker color in the future and/or washing the cover if need be! Also, Ikea makes a nice small sized slipcover couch that is also a fold out bed for around $700-800 I believe. We have it in our 2nd bedroom in white :)

  15. We have the PB Buchanan and we love it! So comfortable and livable. I've always wanted a white or linen color sofa but talked my self out of it as this was our main living space. So glad I did. We have the Everyday Suede in Light Wheat. Such a great color and so easy to clean!!

    1. Hi, I'm considering purchasing this couch as well. How are the cushions holding up? Looking for firm cushions that hold up. Your info. would be a tremendous help Thanks!

  16. I have had so much trouble finding a couch! I know I don't want microfiber and I want a beige sofa. I wish I could afford that Williams Sonoma one. I also am scared of buying one online because you don't get the chance to sit in it...

  17. The pillows are awful and I disliked everything else in the entire building of Rooms to Go, but this sofa looks great in person (linen-like texture) and can be ordered stainguarded: http://www.roomstogo.com/product/Sofas/Cindy-Crawford-Home-Hadly-Sofa/10135754/

  18. Skip PB alltogether. For the price their stuff isn't made well. I have gone through several PB pieces and wish I had never shelled out the $$ because they look great at first, but wear really quickly. I 100% recommend anything from Bassett. We have a couch and chair from there and even though they are 4 years old look practically new! There design center is amazing and has lots of fabric choices. Good luck!

    1. Agreed! We bought a PB dining set, bedroom set, couch and loveseat about six months ago and they are SO prematurely worn! A crack in the table, split in the bed finish, busted cushion and faded covers...SO disappointed!

  19. I love the PB look! We bought ours at klausner furniture, I wanted a white sofa as well. Ours has texture which makes it a little more people friendly than a slick white piece of fabric. Klausner had ridiculous prices too that you can't beat!

  20. I have the PB Buchanan sofa in white - here's the good and the bad: The Bad - when I placed my order (in June) they said that it was being custom made and would be ready within a month. I didn't see the sofa until September, so if you want to get rid of those beach chairs, I do not recommend ordering from PB. The Good - I have an 80 pound dog that lives on that couch and it has also suffered from numerous red wine spills. I just take the covers off and pop them in the washing machine and hang them to dry. After 3 years, the couch still looks pretty good!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh my...ha! Hopefully you knew he was selling the sofa! I do love the colors of the beach chairs and pillows, so at least they are cute! I would love white furniture also, it makes the room so bright, but with 3 pups, I would be crazy out of my mind dealing with puppy paw prints. It would be great though since your dog has white fur. I do also agree with everyone that you should go with a slip cover option, or make sure they install a good stain guard. I had a light colored sofa years ago, and had red crystal light spilled all over it, and thankfully the stain guard saved the day, and was able to get it all out with a carpet cleaner. Can't wait to see what you finally choose!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I LOVE THIS! lol! this is going to sound crazy but if you want white AND you have a dog, Ikea has some good affordable white couches and worst case scenario you won't be spending a fortune if anything goes wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  23. We just bought a white couch from Ikea and love it! The slipcovers come right off and are machine washable, in case anything bad happens.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We have that exact same couch and we are DYING to get rid of it! I don't think we're brave enough for a white one(we are just too clumsy) but I just love the look of a white couch!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Haha!

    I share your love for cream couches. I have an entire living room set that I actually bought back in college, over 6 years ago. It was super cheap at Rooms to Go, and is microfiber. It came with several bottles of fabric cleaner, and I scotch guard and deep shampoo vacuum all of it about once a year. It is still spotless to this day - even with a dog and wine spills and college parties in the heydays!

    Good luck couch shopping!

  26. Husband & I have a textured white sofa from Haverty's and it has held up through two moves and a few spills; I think the texture really helps cover the wear & tear. We also had a slipcovered sofa from Ikea (the Ektorp line) and when we decided to sell it prior to moving I was devastated. It was inexpensive, easy to keep clean by washing the cover and incredibly comfortable. Not to mention it looks like some of the PB sofas!

  27. World Market has small and inexpensive slipcovered sofas. Of course the quality may not be as good as some, but let's be honest, us ladies like to change things up routinely anyway;) The reviews seem pretty good from briefly looking too.
    I purchased sofas from West Elm bc they have some on the smaller side for our space. For the $, I am not that happy with quality. I also love the PB sofas but most were too bulky for our space. Definetely thinking slipcovered is a nice option for anyone since it gives you options to change, clean, and just relaxed look:) Good luck!

I am a New Englander but lived down South for 5 years and your blog makes me smile and miss it :) As for the couch, try IKEA like others have mentioned... the Ektorp line is cute, very comfy, slipcovered and very affordable. We also have a brown microfiber sectional with a yellow lab and feel your pain :)

  30. I have heard the PB sofas do not hold up well. Another complaint was the the cushions tend to flop around and not hold their shape. We are getting our Ballard Designs slipcovered sofa on Monday. We went to both stores to actually sit on the different brands and thought the BD sofa was much more comfortable and had deeper cushions. So many people I know recommend the IKEA EKTORP sofa for a less expensive option. (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19875765/) Good luck and keep us updated!

    1. Hi, I was wondering how your Ballard sofa is holing up? I keep going back and forth between a PB sofa and a Ballard's one. \

      Also, which Ballard sofa did you purchase? Are the cushions holding up? Any info. is much appreciated. Thanks!

  31. How funny! Good luck on your search! I do recommend you get a slipcover sofa if you're opting for a white/cream colored one.. the family I used to babysitt had young kids and a white slipcover sofa. The mom was constantly washing the slipcover because the kids got it dirty a lot.

  32. Have you looked at the Ektorp couch from IKEA. I personally don't have it, but my good friend does and 5 years later looks great. The couch itself isn't that expensive and comes in white.

  33. Furnitureland South is our very favorite place to but furniture. High quality lines at amazing prices. As for white - yes, it's crazy, but one tip I've heard recently is to get pieces upholstered in indoor/outdoor fabric. I've been told it deflects everything. I'll definitely be reupholstering my dining room chairs with this eventually. It might be a good solution for a white couch -- and you could "comfy" it up with pillows and throw blankets. I'd go upholstered vs. slipcovered. Kids seem to destroy slipcovers.
