Baby Footprint Stamped Tea Towels

My mom's birthday is a few days after mine and each year she gets harder and harder to buy for. I've pretty much been using framed pictures of Caroline for every gift for family since she's been born and I'm sure everyone is thinking "thanks, but please not another picture frame" so I had to get a bit more creative for this occasion. I wanted a practical grandma gift that would get good use so I decided to make footprint stamped tea towels!
Now, you're probably thinking you don't need a tutorial for this and you're right. But it's definitely not as easy as you would think. First you have to paint the baby's foot, then you have to somehow pick her up without her feet touching anything (including you) and carefully stamp her foot in the middle of your towel.
It's imperative that you buy a pack of at least 5 towels for lots of attempts. Only one of my attempts at stamping Caroline's foot was successful...
My first piece of advice is to not use red paint. The outcome looks like a creepy Halloween project. Lesson learned.
By the last towel I got a decent footprint but I'm still not entire happy with how it turned out so I sent it to mom along with some flowers. I guess some projects are better left on the pages of Pinterest.
If you have any other (preferably less messy) gift ideas for grandparents I'm all ears!

  2. One of my favorite gifts to give new moms is a handprint Christmas ornament set from thegrandparentgiftcompany.com (also sold on Amazon). It is a gold frame where you add a gold handprint of the child and hang on your tree. They also sell them for grandparents. The two I have of my boys are by far my favorite Christmas ornaments year after year. Just an idea I thought I would pass along!

  3. Well I think the final outcome is just too cute! Maybe our next playdate can have some sort of craft for holiday gifts? My gears are turning...

  4. I am all about giving picture frames and Shutterfly books! Shutterfly also has some great gift options, like personalized cell phone cases that I have used in the past.

  6. My niece and nephew gave me a coffee mug with their picture on it and I love it! Not super original but I use it on my desk to hold pens. It lets me display their pic and serves as storage at the same time, so I may do something similar with my daughters pic for my Mom to use at work!

  11. We did footprint turkeys last year. We made a canvas for home and a few extra prints for grandparents. I put the baby in her door jumper and set it so her feet didn't touch the ground. Genius move!

  12. I am cracking up at the "creepy Halloween" comment, haha. And yes, getting baby prints are seriously like THEE most difficult thing to do!! I'm still learning how to get prints on something without later washing off. It's a practice in patience to wrangle your little one around to doing this kind of project.

You are crazy, though-I think the towel looks AMAZING!! :)

    Cheers,
    Samara

  14. I tried to make those cute feet and hand print cards for grandparents day last year, it took FOREVER to get a good card. Then at Christmas time I made a handprint ornament that was a lot easier than a footprint one ;) loved the outcome of yours!!

  17. This is such a sweet idea! I feel like I'm always looking out for new ideas for the grandma's birthdays; I guess you can only give so many pictures? I don't know. Maybe not. But It is nice to mix it up a bit. I've done foot and hand print projects before and it does take patience and care to make it just so. I think it turned out great though and I'm sure your mom will love looking at the towel in her kitchen :)

  18. Oh, wow! I think the final one looks great! I bet you could have make the lines more crisp with a small paint brush? I don't know....I still think they look great!

  19. i made a silhouette of my little for my mom and mother in law for Mother's Day this year and they loved it! Just take a pic of her from the side, print it out, then use an exact-o knife to trace around her head and onto black paper. Glue that onto some card stock and put in a frame! So easy and basically free to do!

  24. SUCH a good idea and so sweet! So made ornaments for Sawyer when he was that little where we had to stomp his hand and foot in. I totally get you when you say its hard. We kept having to do it over and over until we got it right. Such a good gift though when its all said and done.

  27. This looks PERFECT, and so so special - I did a similar thing for Father's Day (Grandfather's Day) from the girls and I combined both their footprints into a framed page with a quote about walking into their lives - very sweet x
