Weekend Rewind & Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour | January 2020

It’s my first weekend rewind of 2020! I’m going to try to do one of these each month because they are some of my favorite posts to look back. Alright, let’s recap our extra long weekend…

Friday

Friday evening we had Family Movie Night! We watched Parent Trap, had Chipotle delivered for dinner and popped some cookie dough in the oven for dessert.

Saturday

Saturday morning Matt took the kids to Winston to see his parents’ new home while I spent the day with Oprah! Yes, Oprah!! My friend Stephanie and I scooped up tickets to her 2020 Vision Tour and the entire day was spectacular and inspiring. There was very little information provided ahead of time so we weren’t sure what to expect. Here’s how the day unfolded:

Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour: Your Life in Focus

Morning Session

Oprah took the stage and gave a powerful speech on her mind, body & spirit wellness journey through the years. She captivated the audience with her personal stories and inspiring message. Stephanie and I could not write down notes fast enough.

After the opening talk, she brought Jesse Israel, founder of The Big Quiet, to guide the audience through a mass meditation. It was pretty cool to be in a completely silent arena for a few minutes.

After the meditation, Oprah was back on stage guiding us through a workbook exercise (which was included in our cute swag bag filled with goodies) to help us reveal areas to focus on for greater wellness in our life.

Following the workbook exercise, Laila Ali gave her testimony. It was pretty good.

For the last session of the morning, Oprah had us crack our workbooks back open and continue our wellness exercise. Building on our wellness focus from earlier, we set our wellness intention for the year and committed to some healthy habits.

Lunch Break

Each of the swag bags included a voucher for a boxed lunch from Panera. It was absolute chaos trying to feed 15,000 people in an hour, but I don’t know if there was any easier way to facilitate the lunch break.

Afternoon Session

Julianne Hough kicked off the afternoon session with her KINERGY movement experience. I honestly was skeptical of this part when I saw it on the agenda and figured we’d sit this “dance party” out. Nope. It was actually insanely fun. Watching an entire arena (from our very, very high seats) sway and pump their hands was really cool. Julianne’s choreographed routine brought serious energy to the room to get us back in focus for the rest of the day.

Back on stage in tennis shoes, Oprah led us through part 3 of the workbook which focused on creating a commitment contract to yourself for your wellness goals.

Afterwards, we watched a short video on how Weight Watchers was created. I expected this to be one giant WW commercial but it totally wasn’t. The video was inspiring and focused on Weight Watchers founder, Jean Nidetch’s, journey to creating the company from a church basement. It really focused on empowerment. Following the video Oprah brought Mindy Grossman, CEO of WW, and 3 local women on stage to talk about how their WW wellness journeys have transformed their lives (we saw a glowing 74 year old grandma in a sexy ballgown that she previously thought she was too old and overweight to ever wear, a young mom who lost enough weight to finally make her dream come true of joining the army and a burnt out attorney who took control of her mental and physical health allowing her to go after her dream career as a marine biologist).

It was then time for Amy Schumer!!!!! Everyone was grateful Amy made it to the show after going through IVF just a few days earlier and feeling absolutely terrible. I’m sure she would have rather been in her bed resting but she rallied and was hilarious. She talked about her emotional and physical IVF journey, pregnancy and mental health. She was terrific — as always!

Oprah wrapped up the day with a closing talk that was intense and powerful. She shared what it was like growing up in poverty and the challenges of being the first person in her family to make money. Her mother died on Thanksgiving day 2018 and she shared her hospice experience and how hard it was to say goodbye, forgive and find the right words to thank her mom just before going to heaven. And she empowered the audience to dream big and “take a chance on yourself” — something she’s had to do many times to get where she is today!

If you’re headed to one of Oprah’s upcoming shows, I highly suggest checking out Stephanie’s post on what to expect and how to plan!

Sunday

We went to church, out for lunch then spent the afternoon baking cinnamon buns and simmering a new soup (recipe coming to the blog soon)! And since it wasn’t a school night, we let the kids stay up a little later and watch the new Aladdin. My dress / My booties / my tote / tom’s pants / tom’s shirt / tom’s shoes / caroline’s boots / caroline’s dress / Caroline’s Headband / matt’s dress shoes

Monday

School was closed for MLK Day and both kids were excited to tell us everything they had learned about Martin Luther King Jr at school.

Monday afternoon we all went to see Dr. Dolittle at Studio Movie Grill. The movie was super cute and we all loved it.

We spent the rest of the afternoon catching up on all the chores — laundry, cleaning up the house, etc. I made a delicious Whole30 bolognese sauce over spaghetti squash for dinner and then packed my bags for a work trip.

And that’s a wrap on the weekend!

Hi Christina! Do your kids eat the soups you make each week? My kids (2 and 4) are pretty good with a basic chicken noodle or tomato, but if I add in much else it's a no go!

So it depends! Unless it's spicy, we always serve them whatever soup we're having. Thomas eats literally anything and everything. However, Caroline will handpick every single tomato or herb or 85% of the soup ingredients out before basically just drinking the broth. haha. So yes and no!
