Five on Friday

Happy Friday…from Charleston! Yes, Charleston!

This year I planned our Community Group Retreat in the Holy City — one of my absolute favorite cities. For the next few days, our group is taking a break from carpool drop-offs, packing lunches, bathing babies and work. And we’re trading it in for a weekend away to recharge together, to dive even deeper into conversations that we never have enough time to finish during our monthly meetings, and to celebrate friendship.

1. Thomas is Cast-Free!

If you follow me on Instagram, you knew this would be at the top of my 5 today! Thomas got his cast off on Monday! Woohoo! I am beyond grateful that his little wrist has healed so beautifully. For the next few weeks, he’ll be wearing a removable wrist brace to gently ease his wrist back to full motion and movement. We are all SO happy for this little guy!

To celebrate, we took the kids to the pool for dinner and an evening swim (where Thomas could finally use the slides he’s been dying to play on all summer)! And while we were there, Caroline surprised him with a brownie/cookie cake she made which was honestly one of the cutest and most thoughtful gifts ever.

Also, I was dyyyyying over all the messages y’all sent me about keeping your casts from childhood! Although I was totally joking about bringing ours home (omg, the smell, oh the SMELL), I do think it’s absolutely hilarious that many of your parents are STILL hanging on to your decades-old cast (and some have even gifted it back to you).

2. Skin Check Reminder

Last week I had a dermatologist appointment to look at a spot on my back and my doctor ended up removing THREE spots and sending them off for testing. In 2015 I had a more in-depth procedure done to remove a spot on my back and am hoping not to have to do that again. I really hate myself for sunbathing in baby oil in high school and living in tanning beds all through college. Let this serve as a reminder to GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED ANNUALLY.

3. Girl Tribe Game Day Collection

Girl Tribe launched their Game Day Collection this week! If you’re looking for some fun Panthers apparel, I highly recommend checking out their shop! This 80’s Cat Scratch Crew Sweatshirt is so soft and cute. Now I just need the temps to drop so I can wear it out of the house!

4. Book Review: Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Rating 5/5: The book I didn’t want to end. I am a HUGE Fleetwood Mac & Stevie Nicks fan (going to see her this fall!!!!) and rumor has it this book is loosely based on her life and I wanted so badly to believe this was a non-fiction story. The audiobook is narrated spectacularly by 6 voices and is definitely the format I recommend for this book if you want to read it. I absolutely loved listening to one story told through many perspectives — so much drama and the characters felt SO real. Love, love, loved this book.

Book Summary: A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer, revealing the mystery behind their infamous break up.

Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the real reason why they split at the absolute height of their popularity…until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go-Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Another band getting noticed is The Six, led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

5. Recent Family Amazon Purchases

A few items we’ve purchased recently for each family member…

Gymnastics Mat

Caroline cashed in some money from her piggy bank recently to buy herself a gymnastics mat so she can practice cartwheels. She has been using this mat non-stop and it has been worth every penny. It’s a 6 foot foldable mat that is easy for her to carry up and down the stairs, comes in 4 colors, has a good 1.5 cushion. There are TONS of very expensive mat options online but this one is perfect and inexpensive.

GYMNASTICS MAT

Sleep Headphones

I grabbed this bluetooth headphone sleep mask for Matt to help him sleep better and he LOVES it. This noise-canceling sleep mask is made with premium lightweight foam and features a smooth silk lining (super comfortable and breathable). The sound quality is excellent too and the mask holds a charge for 10 hours of playtime. And we’ve found some high-frequency (432 Hz stress-relief) music for him to listen to on Spotify that is really helping him fall asleep (his biggest issue) and stay asleep through the night (still working on that too).

Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream

I’ve been running low on my curly hair products the past few weeks and polled y’all on what you’re loving now. I ended up going with the Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream since it was so highly recommended and because I already love and use this brand — and so far I am REALLY like it! So thank you to everyone who recommended it!

Soccer Cleats

Thomas has decided he wants to play soccer this fall! So we grabbed him these cleats after reading so many awesome reviews! They come in 11 colors and don’t break the bank (because let’s see if he sticks with this sport before we start investing in more expensive gear)!

So many great things! Also, get Matt the Goli brand Ashwagandha gummies. I take one before bed and I think they have really helped me. You can take up to 4 a day, but I just take one!

I have just started taking these gummies but have been eating one in the morning until I used up my pill version from Whole Foods (because Golli is cheaper). Am I making a mistake taking it in the morning?! I don't feel especially tired- any more than usual. I was just thinking the whole stress relief might be helpful at work during the day :) I also just got a bluetooth sleep headbad, if anyone has any recommendations for Pandora stations for sleep noise I'd love to know. I don't have Spotify- is it free like Pandora?
