Poll: Morning Workouts

Dear early risers who workout,

Those of you who get up early to workout, HOW do you do it? Matt and I both have gym memberships. In fact, we always have. And I think we both average using them twice a month? It’s terrible. The problem is I. Love. Sleep. And I need it. Like, a full 8 hours minimum kind of requirement. Unfortunately, the only time either of us have to work out doesn’t exist during our day so if I want to fit into last year’s skinny jeans, I have to carve out time that I would otherwise be sleeping to sweat. So for you crazy people I am so jealous of (especially moms), how do you keep yourself motivated to get out of bed morning after morning (even after the nights you spent slaying dragons in your kid’s room at 11 pm, 1:30 am & 3 am)? Do you have an accountability partner? Do you set your alarm and leave your phone across the room? Give me your tips and secrets.

Sincerely,

9 Round member searching for 6 am workout partner

Is there anyone out there who manages to do this with mornings that are already super early? I have to be to work by 7 which means I'm already up at 5 just to get everyone ready and out the door by 6:30. I struggle with 5! I can't imagine trying to get up at 4am to work out. Also, bonus points if anyone knows how to work a nursing schedule into that (as in feeding a baby, not as a profession... lol). Yikes! I feel defeated already!

I'm a huge fan of Gretchen Rubin (The Happiness Project). She wrote a book a couple years ago about habit change called Better than Before. It's really about understanding yourself and your own tendencies (and the loopholes you use to get out of stuff) to really figure out the best way to create change and form lasting habits. I recommend it! Personally for me, having an accountability partner is key. I also set a reminder on my phone at 8:30 to go to bed. I NEED my sleep too and the only way to get sleep and get up early is to go to bed early. My kids are 8 and 4 and sometimes tough to get to bed. I always let them know that as soon as they go to sleep I'm going there myself (just so they know they're not missing out on any fun after they go to sleep). Also, whenever we all have a tough time getting up in the morning, I announce "We're all going to bed 15 min earlier tonight!" I make sure they know it's not just punishment for them, it's actually helpful and healthy for ALL of us to be ready to go in the morning.

My mom actually sleeps in her gym clothes. So all she has to do is roll out of bed and go to her 5 AM workout.

I’ve been doing a 5:30 Spin class twice a week for 4 years & i don’t think it gets any easier (but I have a 3 & 1 yr old so that probably doesn’t help) but I just make sure everything including water & coffee is ready to go the night before & in the morning I splash cold water on my face & peppermint essential oil on my temples which works like a charm and just leave. But I also don’t believe in gyms anymore after all the wasted money so I do BBG (sweat app) at home 3 times per wk (30 mins) and it just took the stress away of trying to force myself to go to the gym plus it’s easy to squeeze in if traveling.
