Happy 1 month, baby Thomas! It has been wild and fun since you’ve arrived. We are still settling in to our new normal but we’ll eventually get there! As much as we want you to stay little forever, we also can’t wait to watch you grow and see the little person that you become. You are awesome and we love you so!

One Month Highlights:
Thomas,
- You are 8 pounds, 6 ounces (12%), 21″ long (23%) and are still wearing newborn clothes.
- People are now starting to comment that you look like Caroline. Phew – glad you look like one of us!
- You are so laid back. In fact, you are much more go-with-the-flow than your sister was. You are perfectly content running errands any time of day, lounging in the boppy or swing, riding in the car (hallelujah!!!!!) and happily eat or nap anywhere!
- You are a sweet, sleepy babe by day and a high maintenance terror at night. Most of your naps are on the couch with me, in your swing or in your car seat. However, you prefer to dangerously bury your face into blankets or in between me and the couch. Bedtime is 9 pm and you’re up and hungry around midnight. Between 3-4 am you want to party and wake up your sister across the house. Then after you’ve been fed and swaddled you fight going back to sleep and instead are up making fussy noises and can’t seem to get comfortable despite our countless attempts to flip you from back to tummy or move you around the room from the rock n’ play to the pack n’ play and eventually to our bed out of desperation, inserting your paci back in your mouth every 2 minutes until the sun comes up. Fun times.
- Any unexpected loud noise (clinking of dishes, a sneeze, Charlie barking, etc.) sends your little arms flailing above your head in sheer terror.
- You’re rolling to your side now but I’m still not sure it’s on purpose. We’ll celebrate the little milestone anyway.
- Your baby acne is in full force right now but we still think your handsome. Oh, and you have more hair than your sister.
- Your head
control is shockingly strong since tummy time usually lasts about 90
seconds before you lazily pass out on the activity mat for a long
snooze. At least you don’t scream your face off like your sister did. - We’re attempting Moms on Call so you’re taking a 3-4 oz bottle of formula every 3 hours right now and mostly sleep in between. However, at your check-up the doctor said to still feed you on demand so we’re keeping the schedule flexible.
- My goal for breastfeeding/pumping was to make it to your one month birthday. We did it! But it was terrible so I’m slowly tossing in the towel with no regrets. On the very best day I can pump one 4 ounce bottle so I’ve decided it’s not worth the frustration.
- Your sister loves to bring you pacifiers when you’re upset and bottles when you’re hungry. It’s seriously the cutest thing ever. She loves being your big sister and I think you love being her little brother despite her poking your eyeballs, shoving her fingers in your mouth and aggressively patting your head and belly.
- Every few days Daddy gives you a bath in the bathroom sink but you’re getting a little too long for that so we’re transitioning to the infant tub.

And for fun: Caroline at 1 month!

Christina! I've been secretly reading your blog for about 2 years and love love love your posts! Your family is so beautiful! I am a new mommy myself to 6 week old baby boy, Brady 🙂 I had expectations that I would breastfeed/pump for a whole year (really, what was I thinking), but with starting a new job and having to travel starting next week, my husband and I decided to switch to formula….I initially thought of myself as a failure, considering my previous plans and the fact my sister in law breast fed for a year (and made it look soooo easy)… but it is so nice to know other amazing moms out there are stopping around the same age and doing what is best for baby AND mommy! Looking forward to watching Caroline & Thomas grow! :)p.s. Caroline is my girl name for a future little girl 🙂
Hi Sarah! Just sending a little more encouragement… Know that whatever you choose for your baby is the right thing! When you are happy & stress-free baby will be too! I bf'd for the first month & then switched to EP and barely made it to 3 months. When we decided to stop EP there was a HUGE weight lifted off my shoulders & funny enough things started getting easier! Just know you're a great mom, breastfeeding or not!
Ah he is so perfect!! Hope he gets more comfortable sleeping at night soon so you can get some sleep! I don't miss that part of the newborn stage, but I do miss the cuddling so soak in all in mama!
My very first thought when I opened up your post and saw the first pic of Thomas today was that he looks a lot like Caroline in that shot!! Happy 1 month sweet Thomas! Now let your mama get some sleep tonight!
I think he has your eyes! I'm with you on the nursing, same reasons…I made it to 1 month with my last 2 kids…I don't even know if I want to try this time…but Im trying to not pressure myself. I'll have 6 kids age 7 and under with my youngest 12 months…got to be realistic!
Both of my girls had to have their face crammed into their blanket or bumper pads to sleep from the day they were born! It is so weird, but it definitely comforts them. They both still do it to an extent, too. My 2.5 year old isn't nearly as bad as she use to be, but she will sleep sleep below the pillow with her head cocked up to where her face is right against it. My 16 month old still sleeps in her crib at the top corner of the bed with her face smashed as close as she can to the bumper pads. Ha. It made me so nervous, but helps them sleep so much better! Try putting a small pillow or animal in the pack & play or where ever he sleeps just close enough where he can put his face on it and see if he sleeps better. We would swaddle my daughter and then when she finally fell asleep we would put this little stuffed animal right close to her face and she slept so much better. Sounds crazy, but try it. Hopefully you can find a solution that gets you some rest, girl.
What is it with these second babies and wanting to bury their faces? Vivian does the same thing and it terrifies me! She can't sleep without a blanket over her face! Little Thomas is just precious. In that first picture, I think he resembles Matt quite a bit!:) But it's hard to tell when babies are so little – I'm sure he will start favoring or both of you as he grows:)
I can't believe it's already been one month! He looks so much like his big sister. And yay for happy car rides!
Thomas does look like Caroline but, I think in the last picture of him that He looks like Matt!! I can't believe he's already 1 month! Time really does fly! Oh also, I've heard that babies that are born at night sometimes have a harder time adjusting to sleeping at night. My SIL and aunts suggested trying to keep Jack awake more during the day so that He would sleep at night. Eventually things started to even out & was only up twice a night and then once and now… well, He wakes up but, only because He's somehow woken himself up and we just have to help him back to sleep. Hoping this stops soon! Not to throw unsolicited advice at you but, may help him sleep. Oh also… sorry, squirrel! Another girlfriend of mine who's son is 1 month older than Jack (so, 7 months now) wasn't sleeping through the night at all and waking up multiple times a night still as recent as last month. She started putting him to bed 30 minutes earlier and it worked like a charm! Last we talked about it a couple weeks ago He's only up a couple times a night! So, just a thought but, I know things are a little different with NB's vs 6 month olds too!
Our little guy loved blankies too! He used to need to "smother" himself to sleep. He would rub the blanket over his face. If we were holding him, he needed the blanket on his face! I hated it. As he got older I realized that he was never going to sleep without a blankie. So I took his favorite one and cut it into 6 small pieces and my mom sewed the edges back up. Now he has little blankies he can rub on his face with no chance of it wrapping around his neck or anything. It was a lifesaver! Also, that baby is FAR too cute and you are doing NOTHING to help my baby fever!
What a gorgeous little man! Love these monthly update sand can't believe it's been a month already!! Well done momma, you are doing a great job and hopefully the nights will get easier soon x
Handsome!
