Last week I had McKinsey over for a little mahjong party! Both of us have September birthdays and both of us are mahjong-obsessed, so we decided to celebrate together with an afternoon of Siamese mahjong!
It was a warm, beautiful day so I set up our game table outside and whipped up some frozen espresso martinis! These were SO delicious. The night before, I froze cold brew coffee in large ice cube trays and just before McKinsey arrived I blended up our cocktails.
Frozen Espresso Martini
For when you want an espresso martini but it's still too hot outside...
Ingredients
- 6 oz frozen cold brew coffee (freeze in ice cube trays)
- 4 oz vodka
- 2 oz kahlua
- Splash of half & half (optional but SO good!)
Instructions
Blend all ingredients together and pour into 2 martini glasses. If you want it to be a little more frozen, pop it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes and it will be so dang delicious. Garnish with coffee beans or a star anise.

McKinsey and I love gifting each other funny mahjong accessories, so I knew she’d love a set of tile takers. Naturally, I tied them to her gift with a big bow. When she sat down at the table, she spotted mine out for playing with and immediately yelled, “Oh my gosh! You got tile takers!” We were already cracking up, and then I handed her present to her. When she saw her own set, we lost it. As ridiculous as these things may seem, let me tell you—they’re actually very useful, especially if you’ve got short arms!
When it was my turn to open my gift, I was beyond excited. McKinsey is the queen of thoughtful gifting, and she surprised me with a mahjong playing card game and card holder racks, both things I’d been eyeing! But the biggest surprise was a set of old mahjong cards from our birth years for us to play with. Fun fact: mahjong cards used to combine two years instead of one, something I didn’t know! And how wild that they used to cost just $2.50?!
I was completely blown away! These cards weren’t easy to track down, but she managed to snag a few on eBay after lots and lots of searching! How amazing is that?!
Playing with these nostalgic cards brought such a fun, sentimental vibe to our game.
Our birthday mahjong party was such a blast and I’m so grateful to have McKinsey as such a special longtime friend. Playing with those old mahjong cards added a fun, nostalgic touch, and we couldn’t stop laughing the whole time. After maybe one too many frozen espresso martinis, we hopped on our kids’ scooters and cruised down to the bus stop to pick them up — the perfect ending to the day.
My friend recently launched Middle & Main Mahjong which is where you can find the tile grabbers and our fun “I was THIS close” cocktail napkins! Her shop has SO MANY cute mahjong items, including some gorgeous sets that are available for pre-order. And she gave me a code to share with y’all! Use CAROLINACHARM10 for 10% off your order.

OMG!!! I absolutely love this! I need to do some research - Mahjong isn't a thing in South Africa so I have no clue how it works...

It's one of my favorite tablecloths!! I actually have it in 4 prints and love them all. I recommend not washing it unless you need to because it does fade over time. Here's the link (the print is ambrosia): https://amzn.to/3TS90t1
