Guest Post: A Day In Alyssa’s Life

Meet our Day In The Life guest writer, Alyssa! She a wife, mom to 2 girls, works in sales, and lives in Indiana!

A Little About Alyssa

Good morning, Carolina Charm readers!  I’m Alyssa, an elder-millennial working mom (40 year old) based in IN.  My husband and I are parents to two girls (ages 6 and 1).  I’ve worked remotely in sales for 10+ years for a healthcare company.  My husband works in agriculture sales.  As a family, we like to bike, hike, cook, bake, and do craft projects.

I enjoy reading blogs for glimpses into lifestyles like last year’s day in the life series, and I’m very excited to share a day in the life with you this year.

A Day in Alyssa’s Life

Here’s a peek into my family’s typical day (summer version):

6am-6:30am: Wake up/make coffee/eat breakfast (yogurt, fruit, honey with Aldi’s dark chocolate and sea salt granola), and have some one-on-one time with my husband while we chat about current events and our girls.

6:30am-7am: Take shower/do a five-minute make-up/let hair air dry/get dressed.

7am-7:30am: Respond to work emails/review work calendar.  For scheduling I use Outlook (work) Google Calendar (personal), and Hobonichi Techno planner (both).  For planning tips and tools I look to Best of Both Worlds Podcast and Best Laid Plans Podcast.

7:30am-7:45am: Wake up older daughter/wake up younger daughter and nurse her.  Meanwhile my husband gets breakfast around for the girls (Kix cereal with ½ banana, for example.  Other favorites include Quaker dinosaur oatmeal and egg in a basket) and preps the bottles for daycare for the one-year-old.

7:45am-8:30am: I sit with the girls while they eat breakfast/unload dishwasher/do the 6-year-old’s hair (pig tails with bubble braids) and by 8:30am they leave for daycare drop-off.

8:30am-11:45am: Work/Respond to work emails/call prospects/internal meeting.

11:45am: Pump (my daughter is newly one and have reduced pumping sessions during the work day from two to one/check personal email).

11:45am-12:15pm: Lunch (Amy’s meal with raw carrots)/read blogs.

12:15pm-4pm: Work/Respond to more emails/two online client meetings.

4pm-4:05pm: Grab a snack from the kitchen for my 6-year-old.  I also keep these sugar-free suckers in the glove compartment of my car.

4:05-4:50pm: We have two daycare pick-ups, and it takes approx. 45 min. round trip.

4:50pm-5:30pm: Back home/drop bags/dock my phone on the charger (helps me look at it less)/sanitize baby bottles/older daughter and I make princess popcorn from The Disney Princess Cookbook.

5:30pm-6:30pm: The girls and I move outside/kick soccer ball around/imaginary play/trampoline while my husband cooks.  (My husband likes to cook and I like to clean up.  Full ownership is encouraged.)

6:30pm-7:30pm: It’s a nice evening so we eat outside on the front porch/I do clean-up (put food away, load and start dishwasher, etc.)

7:30pm-8:30pm: I do the bedtime routine for our one-year old (pjs, nurse, sleep sack, rock) while my husband is with the 6-year-old (trampoline followed by Bluey).

8:30pm-8:45pm: 6-year-old gets ready for bed while my husband brushes his teeth. I read to the six-year-old and then my husband takes over.  I’ve gathered children book recommendations from Cup of Jo (search children’s books) and Everyday Reading.

8:45pm-10pm: Check phone/prep for tomorrow (get my six-year-old’s swim bag around for tomorrow’s lessons)/Brush teeth/PJs.

10pm: Read in bed and lights out.

Notes:

Laundry: Starting on Friday my husband and I sort, wash, dry, and put away several loads of laundry throughout the weekend.  I like the arbitrary deadline of having all clothes cleaned by Sunday evening, so they are ready for the week ahead.

Like many families my husband and my two-parenting working household is different from what we experienced growing up.  In my husband’s family his dad worked while his mom was a SAHM.  My mom was a single working mom.  I enjoy chatting with all types of families and hearing tips and tricks for works (and doesn’t work).  Please feel free to reach out to me anytime at [email protected].
