At the beginning of the year I polled our teachers on what types of gifts they like (and dislike) and there was an overwhelming response for gift cards, specifically Target gift cards. I totally get that. I love Target gift cards too and I definitely don’t need any more travel size hand sanitizers. However, I still wanted to personalize their gifts a bit from our class so I got crafty. In lieu of cards I picked up some candy (for the exact same price, about $12) and whipped out my hot glue gun for a quick and fun project — DIY Candy Cane Sleighs!
As part of the teacher survey, I also collected their candy preferences so I kept that in mind when picking out the sleigh materials.
I found a pack of these pretty gold gift card holders in the Target dollar aisle.
DIY Candy Cane Gift Card Sleighs
- 5 miniature candy bars (per sleigh)
- 2 candy canes
- 2 same size square candy bars of your choice (I used a Russel Stover candy bar & KitKat)
- Glue (or tape)
- Ribbon
- Mini Bow
- Gift card box w/ gift card (optional)
-
Glue the candy canes onto the bottom of the KitKat as the base of your sleigh. I reinforced with tape too.
-
Stuff your gift card box and on top of the KitKat.
-
Stack your candy layers, gluing them down as you go. Use smaller pieces as you add layers to create a pyramid shape.
-
Wrap the ribbon around the sleigh and tape it down.
-
Top with a bow!
*consider pinning to save for later
Would love to know what you get your kiddo’s teachers during the holidays! I’m always looking for new ideas!

LOVE this! My niece and nephew are in their teens and request gift cards every year which I totally get for their age… BUT I love to give personal gifts so I think this is the perfect compromise… so looks like I'll be getting crafty this weekend 🙂 Thanks for sharing!Justine @ Charm City Ciemny'swww.lifeasabaltimoregirl.blogspot.com
This is SO cute! I love how a gift card is in there, but it's still so personalized! Nothing like a homemade gift!
Such a cute and thoughtful idea!
Adorable!
Super cute idea! I'll have to keep this in mind when my little one is in daycare next year. Curious to know what the teachers said they disliked?
How cute are you? I've got to remember this for future use!
These are adorable – absolutely love them! x
I love these! They are so cute!
Such a cute, fun spin on just giving a gift card!
This is SO cute to leave on your neighbours' doorstep! Great idea!
Adorable!! I'm stealing- thanks! ; )
That is adorable!! I did gift cards tied w/ red ribbon on a large ghirardelli chocolate bar and a red bow. The gift cards were to a local restaurant in our area. I too think gift cards the best and most practical. Only so many candles, soaps, lotions, ornaments, etc. a teacher can possible use!!
