Nothing makes Halloween more fun than family Halloween costumes! If you’re ready for family costume inspiration, I’ve gathered some of our favorite, easiest, and most creative family Halloween costumes through the years. One of our favorite traditions is rotating who gets to pick the theme each year, which keeps things fun, surprising, and occasionally a little chaotic…

Fast Food Family
For 2025, our crew showed up to the neighborhood Halloween party as a Fast Food Family, and took home the costume contest win for the second year in a row!
I went full Wendy from Wendy’s (pigtails, apron, and all), Matt completely embodied Colonel Sanders from KFC like he’d been preparing for this role his entire life, Caroline made the cutest Chick-fil-A cow you’ve ever seen, and Thomas was an unhinged and hilarious Ronald McDonald from McDonald’s. Mabel tolerated being Burger King, and Sprinkles the guinea pig, naturally, stole the show as the Hardee’s star. It was chaotic, hilarious, and absolutely one for the books.
It was ridiculous in all the best ways, and honestly, I don’t know how we’ll ever top it. Though at this point, it’s safe to say we’ve officially earned our spot as the neighborhood’s reigning costume champs.

Creepy Clowns Family Costumes
Last year, it was my turn to pick, and I was SO ready to lean into a creepier costume. Enter: Creepy Clowns. This was definitely our boldest family Halloween costume yet, and the neighborhood seemed to agree – we actually won the costume contest! With eerie wigs, exaggerated makeup, and clown suits that were just the right amount of unhinged, the final look was both over-the-top in the best way. And yes, that’s the guinea pig with the red balloon.
Witches & Wizards Family Costumes
Technically, this was supposed to be my year to choose, but while we were in the pet store, the kids spotted the cutest little witch costumes for Sprinkles and Mabel…and just like that, the decision was made. Between the cloaks, wands, and tiny pointed hats, it ended up being one of our most fun (and photo-worthy) themes.
Avengers Family Costumes
When it was Matt’s turn to pick our family Halloween costumes, he came prepared. We had just finished watching the entire Marvel movie series in chronological order as a family, so the Avengers theme was an easy yes for everyone. The kids were pumped to suit up as their favorite heroes, Matt went all in as Thor, and I somehow ended up as Groot. Not exactly glamorous, but I committed. Another epic costume year in the books.
Little Mermaid Family Halloween Costumes
This year was Caroline’s turn to choose our family Halloween costumes and she picked Little Mermaid! I anticipated Thomas not loving the theme, but when we told him he would get to carry a sword as Prince Eric he was all in. Matt was a trooper and wore an itchy beard all night, and the costume pieces took some work to track down, but it was so worth it. Caroline was super happy (even though she decided not to wear her wig after 20 seconds of trick-or-treating).
Power Rangers Family Costumes
When it was Thomas’s year to pick our family Halloween costumes, so no one was surprised when he wanted to go all in on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I was this close to giving Caroline “Best Sport” for going along with the theme…until I watched Matt squeeze into his morphin skinsuit. I’m talking laughing-so-hard-I-couldn’t-breathe level tight—and to top it off, the suit didn’t even have eyeball holes. Like, zero visibility. He really took one for the team. But truly, we made Thomas’s Halloween dreams come true with this theme, and seeing how happy he was made the whole thing worth it. (Though Caroline was already plotting fairy tale revenge for the next year.)
Mario Brothers Family Halloween Costumes
Since this was the very first year we committed to family Halloween costumes, we made sure everyone was on board before we went all in. Thomas could not have been more excited to be Mario, with Matt as Luigi by his side. Caroline was immediately sold the moment she realized she could wear a princess dress. I gladly claimed Lakitu (yes, the guy in the cloud) mostly because it meant I could wear yoga pants all night, though a few readers mistook my “final lap” sign as a pregnancy announcement at first!

These are the BEST!!! Halloween isn't big in South Africa, otherwise I would definitely be ordering family costumes every year! x
