I wanted to share the cutest and easiest “pencil snack” that is perfect for celebrating all sorts of school occasions — back-to-school, 100 days of school, last day of school, classroom parties, school bake sale, or an extra special afternoon snack after a big test!
Caroline and I recently made these for her friends for a back-to-school play date we hosted and they were a huge hit. All the girls loved them and several even wore the ribbon in their hair for their first day of school!
Here’s how we made them…
School Pencil Snack Ingredients
- 12″ Disposable Piping Bags
- Ruler Grosgrain Ribbon
- Lead: Mini Chocolate Chips (The mini chocolate chips fill in the tip of the bag better than regular chocolate chips)
- Wood: Popcorn (I use pre-popped popcorn to save time)
- Body: Goldfish
- Ferrule: Hershey Kisses
- Eraser: Pink Starburst (you can find “All Pink” bags of Starburst at most grocery stores) or order online at Target / Amazon / CVS
Step 1: Pencil Lead
In your piping bag, add a small amount of mini chocolate chips to create the “pencil lead.”
Step 2: The Wood Tip
Add a small amount of popcorn to create the wood tip of the pencil.
Step 3: The Pencil Body
Fill most of the bag up with goldfish to create the body of the pencil.
Step 4: The Ferrule
Add one layer of Hershey Kisses to create the ferrule (the metal thing that attaches the eraser).
Step 5: The Eraser
Finish the pencil with a handful of pink Starbursts to create the eraser. You can find bags of “All Pink” Starbursts at most grocery stores.
Step 6: Tie the Ribbon
Tie a bow of ribbon around the bag to close up the pencil!

I was so thrilled to have Woman’s Day Magazine feature these cute little snacks in their August/September 2024 issue too!!

How long should I cut each ribbon to make the bows?

Thank you so much for this idea, I found it on Pinterest. I volunteered to donate 45 treats for my sons 3rd grade End of the year party and this was a hit. My mom and I had so much fun making them, it was super easy and the kids loved the snacks and treats inside.
