The last day of school always feels like such a big milestone, and I love finding fun last day of school celebration ideas to kick off summer break. And honestly, it does not have to be anything over the top. Sometimes a fun cake, a water balloon fight, or decorating the car for pickup is the perfect surprise to make the day feel really special.
Over the years, we’ve celebrated the last day of school in lots of different ways, from simple traditions at home to full backyard splash parties with friends. I rounded up some of my favorite ideas below if you’re looking for fun ways to celebrate the start of summer with your kids.

Build-Your-Own Waffle Bar
One of my favorite easy last day of school celebration ideas is an extra fun breakfast, and this build-your-own waffle bar feels festive and exciting for the kids while still being simple to pull together. I set out waffles (you can use toaster waffles!) with lots of toppings like fruit, whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate chips, and peanut butter so everyone can customize their own plate.

School Pencil Snack
If you’re looking for an easy little surprise for the last day of school, these pencil snacks are such a cute idea for a lunchbox treat or after-school snack. They’re simple to make and always get a big reaction from the kids.

Surprise Water Balloon Fight at the Bus Stop
If your kids ride the bus home from school, this is SUCH a fun last day of school tradition. Every year, the parents on our street fill buckets with water balloons, load up the super soakers, and patiently wait for the bus to arrive.
The second the doors open, the kids come sprinting off the bus trying to avoid getting soaked while racing for the water balloons to fire back. It’s complete chaos in the best way and the kids look forward to it every single year.
And honestly, the whole thing only lasts about five minutes, but it’s one of those core memory kind of moments that officially kicks off summer.
One note: we’ve tried silly string too and majorly regretted the cleanup. Water balloons and squirt guns are definitely the move.

The Summer Bucket List Reveal & A Fun Cake
One of our favorite last day of school traditions is revealing the kids’ summer bucket list along with a fun cake waiting on the counter when they get home from school. They get SO excited looking through all the fun ahead, and the cake makes it feel extra celebratory.
When I make our summer bucket list, I like to plug in the big things first like vacations, camps the kids are especially excited about, trips to visit family, pool parties, birthdays, and holidays. Then I fill in the rest with lots of simple things I know we’ll end up doing anyway throughout the summer like getting ice cream, having movie nights, watching fireworks, and going for evening swims.
And let me just say, grocery store bakeries absolutely crush these last day of school cakes. Every single one I’ve ordered has been under $20 and such an easy way to make the day feel special without a ton of effort. I’m sharing several cakes from over the years below in case you’re looking for inspo!

Host A Milestone Last Day of School Party
If your kids are celebrating a bigger milestone like finishing elementary school, graduating kindergarten, moving schools, or wrapping up their final year with a close group of friends, it can be really fun to go a little bigger with the celebration.
One year, before we moved across town and the kids started at a new school, we hosted a big last day of school splash party with classmates and parents to celebrate the end of that chapter. We rented a giant water slide, filled coolers with drinks for the kids, made margaritas for the adults, ordered pizza, and let the kids run wild for hours. It honestly felt like the perfect kickoff to summer.
And if a larger party feels overwhelming or expensive, this is SUCH a good one to split with other parents. You can divide up the cost of the water slide, have everyone bring snacks or drinks, and make it way more manageable while still creating a really special memory for the kids.

However you choose to celebrate, I hope these last day of school celebration ideas inspire you to create a fun new tradition for your kids!
