How to Throw a Dog Birthday Party

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know that we take dog birthdays very seriously. We’ve been throwing pawties since 2012 (starting with our sweet Charlie) and Mabel just celebrated her third birthday, which means I’ve officially logged enough parties to know exactly what works, what’s worth splurging on, and what I’d do differently. Consider this your one-stop guide!

We’ve now thrown three pawties for Mabel, each one a little more dialed-in than the last. Everything I’ve learned — the supplies, the food, the dog cake, the activities — is right here in this post, updated each year with new ideas. Whether you’re planning your pup’s first birthday or your fifth, I hope it gives you all the inspo you need!

Dog Birthday Party Supplies

One of my favorite things about throwing a dog birthday party is that the supplies are SO easy to find and surprisingly affordable. I’ve been using the same core set of supplies since Mabel’s first pawty, and reuse everything until it wears out, adding in a few fun new pieces each year to keep it fresh.

To set the scene, you really only need a few things: a cute banner and/or balloon, coordinating plates and napkins, a tablecloth, party hats (non-negotiable — the dogs tolerate them for approximately 45 seconds but the photos are worth every bit of the struggle), candles for the cake moment, and of course a piñata (do not skip this)! That’s it! Simple, affordable, and so cute.

I’ve linked everything we’ve used and loved over the years HERE for you!

Pro tip: I store everything in a labeled bin in the garage after each party so it’s ready to grab the following year. Setup goes from an afternoon project to about 30 minutes.

Pawty Food & Drinks for the Humans

A dog birthday party is really just a backyard hang for the humans too, so I keep the food simple, fun, and easy to graze on. Over the years I’ve landed on a formula that works really well: a couple of crowd-pleasing dips, something fun for the kids, and a signature cocktail for the adults.

Here are a few of my go-to appetizers:

  • Loaded Baked Potato Dip: One of those recipes that disappears within minutes every single time I make it. A few other easy dips rounded out the spread and kept everyone happy while the dogs ran wild in the backyard.
  • Mom’s Mexican Dip: My go to dip for every party that is so simple. Just a layer of refried beans, softened cream cheese, a can of Rotel, shredded Mexican cheese on top, and baked until bubbly.
  • Pupperoni Cups: They’re adorable, on-theme, and always a huge hit with the crew.
  • Trader Joe’s Frozen Apps: I fill in with frozen apps like pigs in a blanket, mini tacos, etc.
  • Watermelon: Always, always a huge bowl of watermelon. It’s the most refreshing thing on the table, the kids devour it, and honestly it just screams summer backyard party.

For dessert, the Oreo trifle has become our official pawty staple! We made it for the first time at Mabel’s second birthday and it was such a massive hit that it’s now a non-negotiable. Everyone looks forward to it and it is gone super fast. At Mabel’s first pawty we did Walking Banana Pudding cups which were adorable and delicious, but a word of warning — those need to be assembled and served immediately or the whipped cream turns into a melty situation fast. The Oreo trifle is the move if you want something you can make ahead and just set out.

For drinks, I love having a signature cocktail that feels a little festive. The Lavender Lemonade was a huge hit at Mabel’s first pawty, and the Watermelon Margaritas have become a repeat request every summer. Either one is perfect — pick whichever fits your vibe! And of course, a bucket of sodas and drinks for the kids too.

Treats for the Pups

We’ve made a peanut butter banana dog cake every year since Mabel’s first pawty and it is always a massive hit. The dogs go absolutely wild for it, it’s made with simple wholesome ingredients, and Caroline has basically claimed it as her annual birthday cake duty for Mabel.

One thing we’ve learned after making this a few times — skip the full cake and make mini cupcakes instead! We’ve done it both ways and the cupcakes are hands down the move. Each pup gets their own individual treat, the portions are perfectly sized, and there’s no awkward cake-cutting situation while five excited dogs are losing their minds. Highly recommend.

Mini Dog Birthday Cupcakes (or Cake!)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free!)
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • ½ cup milk

For the Frosting

  • ½ cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt
  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine flour and baking soda in a mixing bowl and set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the oil, peanut butter, and mashed banana until creamy. Mix in the egg, then add the flour mixture until well combined. Slowly pour in the milk and mix until smooth.
  4. Pour into a muffin pan for cupcakes or a 6-inch or 8-inch round pan for a full cake. Bake 20–25 minutes for cupcakes or 25–30 minutes for a full cake, until cooked through. Let cool completely before frosting.
  5. For the frosting, mix the Greek yogurt and peanut butter together until fluffy. Spread or pipe onto the cooled cupcakes.

Important: always double check that your peanut butter does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Regular Jif or Skippy is perfect.

The Main Event: The Dog Piñata

If you do nothing else on this list, do the piñata. It has been the absolute highlight of every single pawty and never gets old — for the dogs or the humans watching. We stuff ours with carrots, treats, and tennis balls and the dogs completely lose their minds over it. You can keep it simple with just treats, but the tennis balls take it to a whole new level of chaos and we are here for it every time.

You can watch them bust it open HERE!

Quick note: if you buy this puppy piñata , you’ll need to do a little DIY surgery to make it work. The hole it comes with is too small for tennis balls. Here’s how we made it work: Matt cut a larger rectangle hole in the bottom and I stuffed the piñata with paper to create a funnel effect so the goodies wouldn’t get stuck. After filling it up, we loosely taped the rectangle over the hole—it wasn’t perfect (you could see some carrots sticking out), but it totally worked for the dogs! To make it even more fun, Matt tied a tennis ball to the strings, and the dogs really went after it. It was hilarious watching Deacon and Mabel pull on that tennis ball until the bottom ripped open and carrots and tennis balls rained down everywhere!

Party Favors

Sending the pups home with a little something is such a fun finishing touch and honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole pawty. We’ve done something different each year and I love that it gives us a chance to mix it up:

  • Simple bags filled with dog treats: easy, affordable, and every dog goes home happy.
  • Bags of homemade puppy chow: for the humans! This one was a huge hit and so cute to hand out as guests were leaving.
  • A tennis ball for each pup: simple, practical, and perfectly on-theme after the piñata chaos. Every dog went home ready for a game of fetch!

Any of these work beautifully and won’t break the bank. The tennis ball idea in particular is one I’ll probably come back to again — it’s the kind of favor that costs almost nothing but feels really thoughtful.

Meet the Birthday Girl (& Her Crew)

Meet Mabel, our mini golden doodle! She is pure sugar from nose to tail, endlessly friendly, and completely convinced that every single person who walks through our door came specifically to see her. She follows me from room to room, co-pilots every car ride from the passenger seat, and has a way of making our whole house feel warmer just by being in it. Life with Mabel is genuinely one of my favorite things — so yeah, celebrating her is pretty easy.

Mabel’s best buds Deacon, Ollie, Archie, and Otter (plus their humans, of course) have been there for every single pawty, and the joy on her face as each friend sprints into the backyard never gets old. This crew gets to hang out all the time and it’s so fun watching these five grow up together. It’s like a mini puppy party every single day…and honestly, we’re just lucky we get a front row seat.
