After 6 great years, my faithful Toshiba laptop bit the dust over the weekend. I am still mourning the loss of some of my pictures that were unrecoverable after the unexpected hard drive crash.
Thankfully Matt quickly approved the purchase of a new laptop and off to Best Buy we went to pick out a new one {another Toshiba, of course}. Apparently a lot has changed since the Windows Vista days because I feel like my Grandpa trying to navigate my new laptop.
I promise to be back soon! In the meantime, I would love to know what you use to “back up” your pictures, documents, etc…

So sad to hear about you losing your pictures… that's happened to me before and I was devastated! I back mine up on an external hard drive. Every time I put pictures on my computer, I back them up on the hard drive. I've also thought about joining a website called SmugMug where you can upload your pictures so you have a back up. I'm very paranoid about my pictures! 🙂
I use an external drive AND Carbonite. Carbonite backs your stuff up onto a cloud for like $50 a year (maybe less). You can actually access your computer from anywhere because of the cloud back up, which is great for editing photos on the go. I like having two places just in case my external drive crashes or if our house got broken into, etc. Sorry about your loss! That's never fun. I've been there, and just hadn't backed up to my external in a while, so that's why I like the cloud solution. It does it automatically for you!
Sorry to hear that! I just had the same thing happen. But instead of losing photos, I lost Photoshop! 🙁 I use a Seagate Terrabyte Harddrive, so I can put literally anything and everything on there.I would die if I couldn't blog! I love my little blog.
I also lost ALL of my fonts, because I didn't think of saving them to the harddrive :(So, while I work on my little blog today, I am also going to have to go hunt down all my fonts again, AND write a note to myself to put them on the harddrive!
I lost a ton of pictures when mine crashed too 🙁 I bought an external hard-drive from best buy that has a ridic amount of space. They said it would be very unlikely if everyone in my family were to use it for everything they stored and for it to run out of space. It's super easy to use. I can show you which one – just don't know that name off the top of my head.
This just happened to me 2 months ago. I use TimeMachine on my Mac…but you can just easily back up to en external drive from a PC as well (:I'll be emailing you this week with an idea I have for you ::blogging related::Kaitlyn (:
How awful! We had our laptop looked at this weekend and learned we need to buy a new one asap as well…perhaps I should learn from this and backup NOW.
I have so many pictures from over the years and was always scared that my computer would crash just like yours. A few years back I used to put them all on CD's, but now that is just not nearly enough room. I wanted an external hard drive for them and figured that would also work perfectly for me because I'm obsessed with organizing my iTunes and having songs to play at the gym. I also figured it would be easy to translate them onto a new computer when the time was right. Even though I knew I wanted an external hard drive, I didn't want to spend the money on it because it wasn't something visible right away (if that makes any sense). My brother is really good with computers and GB and MB, so I sent him on the search for me and he bought me one for Christmas! It copied over my files super quickly and now I always have that for pictures and music and it's pretty tiny so easy to store, but also has a lot of memory!
The man and I are both Mac people and we've never had a crash. (I've had mine for 6 years, him 3) Knock on wood! But I also back up onto a cloud and he an external hard drive. (Time machine for Macs). So sorry to hear about your pictures! That must have been devastating.
I use Mozy to back up my files. It's an online company that you upload to automatically and you pay $10 a month. A little pricey, but very reliable and I don't have to remember to back it up on my own.
