Mahjong Table Must-Haves

Let’s talk mahjong table setup—and my favorite items for really leveling up the vibe!

While the game of mahjong is fun on its own, it’s the extras that really bring the party to life! Simple touches like sparkling waters, prizes, tile shufflers, and snacks, are super easy to throw together, but elevate the table in a big way.

Ready to make your game night unforgettable? Let’s shuffle things up!

Mahjong Table

1. A Signature Cocktail & Tons of Sparkling Waters

Let’s start with the crowd favorite: the signature cocktail. When I host mahjong, you can count on a fun drink to kick things off. If it’s a late afternoon or evening, my girls know I’m whipping up something special—usually an espresso martini or a chai martini. Both are super easy to prep ahead and just shake up once everyone arrives.

When it’s warm outside, I’ll usually have a pitcher of margaritas ready to go. And of course, French 75s always steal the show. And the best part? Once everyone’s had their first drink, you can just leave out bottles of champagne to refill your flutes!

    My Favorite Cocktails

Another table must? Sparkling waters! My table is always stocked with a variety of sparkling waters because, let’s be honest, no one wants to play thirsty. They’re the perfect hydration boost between cocktails, or a great option for anyone who wants to sip on something refreshing without the alcohol.

    2. Fun Cocktail Napkins

Okay, hear me out—cocktail napkins are a total must for any mahjong night. It might seem like a small detail, but a funny or quirky napkin really adds that extra fun touch to the table. I love picking out napkins with funny sayings, playful designs, or ones that just make me smile. It’s a simple detail, but it instantly amps up the vibe and gives everyone something to talk about between rounds. Plus, they’re practical—because nobody wants drinks or tiles spilling everywhere, right?

You can find lots of cute options on Amazon, but my favorite napkins are from Middle & Main Mahjong. *Use code CAROLINACHARM10 for 10% off your order.

    3. A Variety of Snacks for the Mahjong Table

Let’s be real—snacks are essential for the mahjong table. I usually make a Trader Joe’s run to stock up on a mix of sweet, salty, and crunchy treats because variety is key. You need options for every craving that hits during the game. I set out a spread for both sides of the table, and we keep it fresh by rotating the snacks between rounds—keeps things exciting and prevents snack fatigue! While I switch up my snacks quite a bit, the one thing you can always find? Werther’s Originals! This started as a joke with my girls—old lady treats for an old lady game—but now, we must have them every time. It’s just one of those quirky traditions that makes our nights even more fun!

TIP: I found the best little acrylic snack tables on Amazon. I use them to keep our snacks and drinks separate when we’re playing on a smaller card table, so we don’t take up any valuable game space. Trust me, they’re a game-changer for maximizing your table setup!

    4. Prizes & Cash

Who doesn’t love a little friendly competition? For me, the best way to make mahjong even more exciting is with small prizes. I’m all about fun, practical gifts—think candles, mahjong-themed hand towels, tiny plants, hand sanitizer, and even fancy auto air fresheners (they’re a crowd favorite!). These prizes are simple but add a fun element of surprise to each round.

And let’s talk cash. Everyone throws in $5 per game, and the winner takes home $20. It’s an easy way to make things feel a little more competitive while keeping the vibe casual. Plus, it’s always fun to see who walks away with the cash at the end of the night!

    5. Mahjong Table Playing Accessories

While these aren’t must-haves for playing the game, I’m all about accessories that elevate the playing experience. Tile takers and card shufflers are game-changers when it comes to making the game flow smoothly. Tile takers make it easy to reach those far-away tiles, while card shufflers add a little extra fun and ease when it’s time to shuffle the tiles. They’re not necessary, but trust me—they make the whole night feel more put together, and they add to the fun energy of the game!
